OJAS, the Sanskrit word for energy, perfectly captures the tough Indian competitive spirit which all the members on our team aim to bring to this competition. The members of Team Ojas always aim for innovation with a simplistic design. Our work revolves around our team motto. Fueled by Innovation, Driven by Determination. Inspite of the meagre number of selected teams from India, Team Ojas, representing VIT University, was the Only Team with a hybrid car in Formula Student UK 2012. We were also the First Team from India to qualify for the prestigious competition. Gaining some experience from the Hybrid Car, we wanted to aim for something which is more sustainable in terms of the environment. For this very reason we shunned the engine, and determined ourselves into making a fully Electric Car. Out of 500 teams which registered for the competition our car got selected in the top 120 teams to compete at FS UK 2013. The design and the suspension system of the car was well appreciated by the judges, for the strength, safety, and simplicity. At the event we were placed 51st in the Business Presentation, 54th in Cost Analysis and 76th overall. We aim to make our this year’s car more innovative, lighter and better.
Formula Student is Europe’s most established and most revered educational motorsport competition. The event is run by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers with the sole aim to inspire, develop and nurture the new innovative and enterprising engineers of the world. Universities from all across the globe participate in this competition to take on the challenge of building a single- seat, open cockpit racing car that can successfully compete in a set of dynamic and static events. The competition seeks to challenge the university students to conceive, design, build, cost, present, and compete as a team; in the process helping them improve their capabilities, push their limits and to broaden their horizons, ensuring a smooth transition from collegiate life to the much more real outer world. The cars are judged across a series of static and dynamic events wherein a maximum of 1000 points – 325 for static and 675 for dynamic – can be scored. The static events include the Business presentation (75), Cost analysis (100) and the engineering design analysis (150); The dynamic events include skid pad (50), acceleration (75), efficiency (100), autocross (150) and endurance (300).
Delving deep into the history of the Team, one finds that the foundation of OJAS was laid down in April 2011 when automotive zealots from electrical and mechanical streams joined hands to build a formula type hybrid car with the Formula student event in UK being the cynosure of each member of the team. Their undeterring enthusiasm and hardwork paid off when Team Ojas secured a berth in the event and was the only Formula Hybrid car from India in Formula student UK 2012. Continuing on with the tradition of innovation the team kicked the engine out of the picture and concentrated its efforts on building a formula type electric car for the year 2013. The “silent beast” Vidyut came into existence. The beast was better in all respects be it performance, weight reduction or even the aesthetic appearance and was among the top 120 teams that competed in Formula student UK 2013. The year marked a steep rise in Ojas’s fame as it was one of the only two electric teams in India. It also cemented a working procedure which the team needed to follow to work in a coherent manner. Year 2013 saw the team rise to all together an entirely different level as the team made rapid improvements and set its eyes on the FSAE circuit ,Riccardo de Paletti, in Itlay. For year 2014 the challenge offered by the team is in the form of the gorgeous formula electric car E619, the blue blooded beast crafted by the 40 artists of the team and it is all set to give the other teams in Italy a run for their money.
